FEBRUARY 2010February has consisted of the usual weekly pub quiz at the Student Unions’ Den plus a special screening of ‘Zombieland’, in association with the student film society Silver Screen, which raised over £140! We have also seen the appointment of a new chair, Lizzie, as we say a fond farewell to Maya who now starts her medical placement in Mansfield. We wish Lizzie much success over the coming year as she steers Working in Tandem to even greater success! JANUARY 2010This month has seen our weekly pub quiz return with a bang, raising roughly £90 on its’ first day. Volunteers due to work at our projects over summer booked their flights and have begun to think about fundraising options. We had a great social, with all the committee members plus most of the summer volunteers: which was a great way for everyone to get to know each other much better. The final big news for January is the addition of Rebecca Peel as Charity Officer. DECEMBER 2009At the beginning of December (also the last two weeks of term), we did a cinema screening of Jumanji at the Savoy Cinema raising £236 on the 1st. On the 3rd, we ran an amazing Murder Mystery evening making over £400. At the same time we had the results of our raffle that we ran over the past two weeks, we raised £260 from the raffle. For more information about these end of term events, please see the January 2010 Newsletter in Newsletters and Media. Working in Tandem would like to thank everyone who has made this last term such a success. From pub quizzes, cinema screenings, murder mysteries and other such fund raisers we have made approximately £1,500 this term alone-a fantastic achievement and we're sure KCEM and our other projects will be thrilled. Next term, we will be planning and running Africa Week; a week to raise money and awareness for African organisations and charities. Also, our pub quizzes will become weekly and we wil be holding more fundraisers.NOVEMBER 2009End of November: Saw another Pub Quiz raising £134 and a Cake Sale which raised £131. Thanks to everyone who supported us and to our volunteers for their help. Mid November: For the following two weeks, the teachers had a great time visiting places (York, Bradford, Nottingham and London) as well as completing their teacher training at the Grange Technology College, Bradford. In their busy schedule, they found time to visit WiT in Nottingham to meet us and discuss how we can work together more efficiently in the future. For more information on the this Study Tour, please see the December 09 Newsletter in Newsletters and Media. Friday 6th November: Touch down - Nai, Neema, Elipokea, Ensue and Loishiye are now here! Everything was fine at the airport and they have had a good nights sleep. We'll keep you posted on how they get on in the UK. We're on Twitter - We've joined the craze so you can follow out latest updates on Twitter: twitter.com/workingintandem Sunday 1st November: Today was our latest Pub Quiz and we raised a respectable £88.65! Thanks to all that came and showed support. Next pub quiz will be in two weeks on the 15th at The Den. We'll keep you posted on how that one goes and all the latest info... OCTOBER 2009October saw the first meeting of our newly recruited volunteers, to which roughly 40 students turned up eager to learn more about Working in Tandem. On October the 4th a Pub quiz was held at Mooch, where students packed out the SU bar- many even sitting on the floor! At £1 an entry we raised a staggering £271- more than double that achieved ever before. After this amazing success, Working in Tandem has decided to hold a pub quiz every fortnight at the newly refurbished Den (entrance opposite Mooch), starting on Sunday 1st November at 8.30pm. We hope it is as successful as the last. So if you would like to make a step to help Working in Tandem then, in the words of our Student Union, ‘Get Involved’! 5 teachers from KCEM and Ensue are coming to England for 2 weeks in November for teachers training, and will be coming to Nottingham for a social (yet to be arranged) on Saturday the 14th November. We also have plans for a Murder Mystery night in December- so stay tuned for more information on that, as well as a film- screening at the Savoy cinema, Lenton. AUGUST 2009Summer volunteers arrive home all in good health! No malaria… ![]() JUNE/ JULY 2009On Sunday 21st June 11 volunteers flew out to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. After a long coach journey to Arusha, on Wednesday 24th June 7 volunteers made their way to Kisongo and 4 volunteers went to Meserani to meet with their project leaders and get settled into village life ready to start their projects. This year there were 2 researchers based in Meserani and 2 researchers based in Kisongo, all of which were researching into new projects for 2010. In Meserani there were also 2 IT teachers, 1 English teacher, and 1 Kindergarten assistant at KCEM. In Kisongo there were 5 teaching assistants at Ensue Primary School. Ensue Primary School saw huge visual improvement as the 7 volunteers in Kisongo decided to use some of their fundraised money donated to WiT to plaster and paint all classrooms. The improvement was staggering and really made the volunteers feel like they had made a difference. Throughout the project the teaching assistants also made several learning aids to help the teachers provide more interactive lessons for their pupils. Many books and other materials were donated by the volunteers also. At KCEM the volunteers used some of their money to create a signpost to place on the main Monduli- Arusha highway to tell people where KCEM is. This was a beneficial exercise as without such a sign or a personal guide it is a relatively hard place to find! The volunteers also helped in painting parts of the Kindergarten to provide an even better environment for the children. Overall, with the knowledge of many new projects that we intend to keep in touch with and give assistance to in the future, Summer 2009 was a success! APRIL 2009Summer Volunteers - This summers group of dedicated WIT volunteers will be heading out to Tanzania in June. We have 13 volunteers that will be working with our partner projects in Meserani and Kisongo. A big thank to all who have supported their fundraising activities over the last few months. Any extra donations would of course be much appreciated! Please do get in touch. Good luck and safe travelling to our volunteers. Look out for pictures of their trip in September! Nottingham University Summer Party - As usual the Tandem volunteers were out and about at this summer's party. Thank you to all those who bought glow sticks and donated their hard earned cash! Upcoming Events: Sounds on the Downs - June 11th - Working in Tandem will be taking part in this summers 'Sounds on the Downs', as organised by Nottingham's SU. We will be doing some face-painting and fundraising here, so come along and show your support! MARCH 2009: Africa WeekThis year Africa Week will ran from the 1st to the 7th March. Our awareness officer Alice worked hard to organise a series of events with Africa based charities across the university. The week was really successful and Working in Tandem managed to raise over £150. There were numerous events run by WIT, alongside other uni societies. These included a debate about aid given to Africa (which, our committee member Maya managed to win!), a club night at Market Bar in Nottingham, a pub quiz and film screening. Working in Tandem would like to thank all societies and local businesses which helped to make Africa week such a success. We hope to make it even bigger and better next year! AUTUMN TERM 2008...This term we have had a number of successful fundraising activities - so thank you to everyone who has supported us! We started the term off with a recruitment fair, to encourage some of this year's freshers to get involved! With their support we ran a cake sale and also a quiz night, at the Old Peacock. This alone was an amazing success, raising around £150! There were even people having to sit on the tables as it was so full! We hope to make this a regular event, so do come and support us whenever you can! In November, we held another cinema screening at the Savoy in Lenton. This time we showed Jurassic Park! Again, we managed to raise an amazing amount of money - over £500. Look out for our next screening in the new year and send us any suggestions of films you would like to see on the big screen! Feedback from the people we worked with in Tanzania summer 2008: “Toby is a very good person, he can work eight hours a day and is not expensive”“We would like similar volunteers, if possible for every term”“She was really helpful and enriched me fully”“They were really interactive – keep it up!”“They have shown good work, kindness and co-operation”“The more you come to Ensue, the higher we go”“I thank you for all you did – used the short time to change my life”“It is so sad to say goodbye”20TH JULY 2008: VOLUNTEERS ARRIVE AT KISONGO!The final volunteers arrived in Kisongo on Sunday, completing the group of six who will be helping at the primary school by teaching and developing resources. Two volunteers will also be helping to conduct research for the Youth Development Network and put together a long term plan for Ensue Community School. 25TH JUNE 2008: TANDEM JOIN THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT NETWORK TANZANIA CHAPTERWorking in Tandem were invited to attend the introductory meeting of the Youth Development Network, which aims to empower young people to gain self employment and improve their skills in vocational subjects. We were also invited to join the network and we hope to work with them in the future. More information will be available on this site shortly. 16TH JUNE 2008: VOLUNTEERS ARRIVE AT MESERANI!Working in Tandem volunteers arrived safely at Meserani Education Centre to start assisting the staff with the development of the centre. We were pleased to see that the Kindergarten, built last summer, is now open and has a full class of around 25 children. Volunteers will be staying until the end of July to research community needs and self-sustainability, and to assist in the maths, computers and English classes. 3RD MAY: PAST VOLUNTEERS MEETINGThe meeting of previous volunteers was a huge success, thank you to everyone who came! The next meeting will be on the 27th of September, where we will be hearing the debriefing from the volunteers visiting Tanzania this summer. APRIL 2008: NEMA's VISIT TO NOTTINGHAM!Between Tuesday 22nd of April and Thursday 24th of April Nema George visited Nottingham. Nema is the children's teacher at Meserani Education Centre, and spent her time here visiting the University and meeting the tandem volunteers going out to visit the centre this summer, as well as catching up with past volunteers who visited the centre in the last few years! GREAT SCOTT!! We sold out! Back to the future at the Savoy cinema sold 337 tickets and we ended up having to turn people away because there just wasn't any room left! It was a great night enjoyed by everyone and ended up raising over £600!! Not bad for a night at the cinema. This makes us the best one-off screening held by a charity!! Keep your eyes peeled next year for more 80s classics on a screen near you! MARCH 2008: AFRICA WEEKThis proved to be a great success with some fantastic events drawing in large crowds. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the only unanswered question is: same time next year? OCEAN MIGRATION was part of Africa Week and proved to be the best night out in Ocean for a long time, people were dressed as safari animals complete with inflatables, all completed by the sound of hakuna matata blaring out across the club! |
